Special Excerpt of My Gripping Romantic Thriller Mystery ~ “Lovers’ Secrets & Revenge”

John Callahan stood pensively by his grandmother’s silver private jet at Kennedy International Airport. The striking blue letters, ANNABELLA O’SULLIVAN, shone on the front sides, revealing a jaw-dropping beauty. A young flight attendant with long wavy red hair and deep dimpled cheeks greeted him.

“I am Ann Marie. I trust you will find everything to your liking.” He had wanted to take a commercial flight to Dublin, Ireland, but his grandmother insisted he take her private jet.
She was a strong-minded woman of considerable wealth and amazingly ageless.
He followed the flight attendant into the jet. The brown soft leather seats smelled new, as did everything else. “Has this plane been purchased recently?” “Oh, no. Mrs. O’Sullivan has her plane completely renovated every year.”

He was shown to his lounge with large brown chairs, a workstation, a small dining area, and a large sleeping room with a queen-size bed and a generous shower. My lord, he thought, overcome by its elegance. “I will be serving your dinner shortly.” Ann Marie
handed him a menu after the plane had lifted thirty thousand feet to a cloudless sky.
“We will be arriving in Dublin in ten hours, give or take. Please buzz me for anything you
might want.”

He had never been on a private jet and eased deeper into the softness of his seat, exhorting himself not to fret why his grandmother had insisted he come without explanation. It was the tone of her voice that deeply troubled him.

The fact he had not seen his grandmother for the past ten years worried him. And worse yet, he hated uncertainties. He loathed what he could not control, despite the fact he knew life was filled with unknowns, an earthly reality that offered small consolation.

He chose a supper of lobster, mashed potatoes, and vegetables, famished from having but a cup of chicken soup during the day. Ronald Casey, a retired NYPD cold case detective, and his closest friend agreed to care for his little mutt, Woofy. Already he missed her. She enjoyed sitting on his lap at meals with her tongue wagging for leftovers. He thought of the woman he had dated for several months.

After telling her he was not ready for marriage, she dumped him, unwilling to waste her life waiting. He had just turned thirty-four and was often lonely, despite his busy schedule of teaching graduate finance and physics at New York University (NYU). He had left the priesthood a year previously, convinced that marriage would be more fulfilling than celibacy, but now frustrated that it had become a fleeting dream.

Summer in New York City was hot, sticky, and smelly. He looked forward to Ireland’s mist and coolness. He ate hungrily, but put aside a tall glass of red wine. Ann Marie showed him to his bedroom suite where a cup of steaming tea with a plate of crumpets rested on the side table. “We will be arriving in Dublin in nine hours. Our flight is expected to be pleasant without turbulence,” Ann Marie said “cheerfully.”

Exhausted, he fell into a troubled sleep. . .

Praise and Reviews for Elizabeth Upton’s Books

“The Shaman and the Mafia”
The Shaman and the Mafia, Elizabeth Upton’s thrilling debut novel, explores themes of devotion, loyalty, guilt, and faith as three unlikely allies must work together to solve the murder of their friend. Like Marietta, Upton joined a convent as a young woman . . . Upton
artfully draws upon her eclectic life experiences, as well as her years studying mysticism, reincarnation, and spirituality to excellent effect in ‘The Shaman and the Mafia.’

Imagine This: You used to be a nun, hiding your voluptuous curves in a drab outfit. So now that you are no longer a nun, still heading a drug center that has all freaks and junkies trooping in every minute, you have every right to flaunt your curves, right? Know about sex, about men, gain some sexual experience, spend some time with a man intimately, right? . . .I loved how Elizabeth Upton made this crime novel as fast-paced as watching a CSI episode (Miami, not New York!) . . .
I recommend this book to anyone who loves Women’s Fiction packed with crime, mystery, suspense, and anyone who is curious about nunnery and dating an FBI agent.

This author knows how to tell a tale with lots of twists and turns. I’m not sure why I was surprised at some of the content, but this former nun can write a story with the best of them. I laughed, I cried and when I couldn’t get to sleep, I just stayed up till dawn when I finally finished . . . Overall, this is a very well-written book and I’d love to see more from Upton. She’s a gifted storyteller.

Secrets of a Nun
Elizabeth’s wonderful book is full of love and wisdom. It peers into the soul and faces some difficult issues that face all human beings who would reconcile their love of God and the beauty of just being human.
